Woman Advocates for Dementia Caregivers - Personally and Worldwide
Lori La Bey of St. Paul, Minnesota has been affected by dementia in many ways. Some by a stroke of fate - and some very carefully and specifically chosen by Lori.
Family Caregiver of Mother with Alzheimer's
Lori's mother has been living with dementia for over 30 years. She has seen her go from just making occasional mistakes to now living in a nursing home, with little ability to communicate.
But Lori has not let this be the end of her story.
Advocate for Improving Dementia Care
Lori has founded a company Alzheimer's Speaks, an advocacy company that works to give voice to all and to change how dementia care is perceived, received and delivered.
Alzheimer's Speaks is involved in many programs and initiatives, including:
- Alzheimer's Speaks Radio, a regular radio show which shares topics on dementia care, products, advocacy, and more. All shows are recorded and can be accessed 24/7. I was fortunate to be a guest on the show, talking about the topic "Keeping Active with Dementia". Listen to the show now
- Arthur's Memory Café, the first memory café in the US. It offers a different style of support group, one that is about laughing, learning, and supporting - all over a good cup of coffee. This location is in MN, but more are starting up. See Memory Café locations in the US.
- Alzheimer's Speaks website with blog and comprehensive resource directory for all things related to dementia. This website had the great honor of being recognized as the #1 influencer online for Alzheimer's by Sharecare and Dr. Oz.
I am so fortunate to know Lori personally as we both hail from the Twin Cities, MN. She has done amazing things in a relatively short time and works tirelessly to raise awareness of dementia and to support caregivers. I am very glad to share all about these resources that are available and hope that you find something that is helpful to you.
